Technology is an important consideration for any online marketing small business, however, often people just starting out don’t have a good understanding of what kind of technology is needed or how it will affect their company.
The following ten suggestions should help you get started well. Whenever possible, try to launch systems and processes that integrate thoroughly, and are available 100% of the time to care for purchasers and prospects.
Establish a computerized system to make your day-to-day existence simple and your checking account healthy.
1. Computer & Peripherals
If you’re going to do online marketing, you’ll clearly need a computer of some sort – preferably one that you own, either a standard model or a laptop. You’ll need one with plenty of memory and speed. A broadband internet connection is preferred over dial-up. You’ll also need a printer. Get wireless capabilities for both.
2. Your Own Domain
Be sure to obtain a website name that you own, so that you can make a start~start} to create your own brand name. Moreover, some advertising platforms won’t permit you to include affiliate links, or even subdomains, but only a domain that you personally own. A first-rate domain name will be succinct (30 characters or less), understandable to the eye and the ear, and indicative of your business or product. The most favored names end in “.com” and those are favorite for many internet marketing businesses, when obtainable.
3. Telecommunications
One more crucial tool is connectivity, including an Internet Service Provider and a phone – either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset – as you prefer. It should have both local and long distance capabilities, and if you intend to hold conferences for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do trainings, etc., you’ll almost certainly want to invest in a teleconferencing service that can carry many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, callers concurrently.
4. Web Hosting Service
You’ll need a hosting service to provide a “home” for your website. There are many web hosting services available to service home based businesses and online marketers. Their offerings do vary somewhat, as do their costs, so make sure to shop around before making your decision.
5. Data & Systems Protection
You’ll also need robust precautions for your software and information. This can take the form of physical security, plus technologies such as firewalls, and security applications like McAfee or Norton.
6. Applications & Data Backup & Restore Features
One more requirement is for backup of your locally stored applications and info. Regardless of the best security programs you might be able to implement, there will likely come a circumstance when you experience a system crash, with either some or total loss of information and key programs. Therefore you will also want a rigorous backup and restore system.
7. Goods
You’ll require one or more services to sell – products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by one or more third parties. If you offer your custom created goods, then you’ll also have to worry about maintaining appropriate inventories, performing upgrades, handling returns, etc. If you get your products from others, then you’ll have to work at maintaining the relations with those vendors, ensuring that required products get shipped on time, customer satisfaction and proper payment.
8. Affiliate Network
If you’re intending to offer numerous affiliate products, you’ll almost certainly also want to join one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, CJ, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.
9. Web 2.0 Capabilities
The Net is very dynamic, so if you want to be successful in today’s environment, you’ll want sites and services that support blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to support a whole host of collaboration, using the web as the network platform).
10. Technical Support
Finally – another regularly overlooked requirement – is the need for first-rate technical support – for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.
If these go down and you are unable to get rapid technical support from any/all your suppliers, the ensuing downtime can impact your advertising campaigns, you can lose or upset potential purchasers, and ultimately, your income will suffer (not to mention your reputation, as well).
Technology is the lifeblood of an affiliate marketing business, and given Murphy’s Law, you must to get ready for the eventual downtime and system crashes that crop up as well. Using all these required technologies will ensure the success of your online small business.
